To a lot of people, the phrase "Prepper" raises notions of the camouflage wearing, gun-toting scary survivalist who is looking forward to the end of the world. However, most Preppers are incredibly ordinary people who don't stick out in a crowd. They are doctors and plumbers and lawyers and carpenters and school teachers. A lot of them don't even own any camouflage!

So what exactly is a "Prepper?"

However, there might be as much definitions as there are people associated with each movement, the basic definition is always that a Prepper is someone who stores equipment and supplies and food in case of an emergency. That emergency could be a major natural disaster being a hurricane or a tornado, a forest fire or gas leak that requires an area to become evacuated, or anything up to and including major collapse with the country's power company. Preppers also take seriously the threat of methods a terrorist attack could affect the power grid or even the nationwide supply network that keeps our grocery stores' shelves stocked.

They're people who are not affected quite definitely with a multi-day power outage or perhaps a broken water main that triggers a run on bottled water at the food store.

What is a "Survivalist?"

Typically a Survivalist can be a hard core Prepper who, not only is it prepared for a natural disaster, is extremely concerned about a dysfunction in law and order. In addition to the Preppers' worry about "SHTF" (shit hits the fan) scenarios, Survivalists are worried with "TEOTWAWKI" (the end of the world as you may know it) and "WROL" (without rule of law) situations. Survivalists begin to see the social order as being very fragile: based mostly on a increasingly burdened government welfare system that have to keep over 44 million Americans on Food Stamps. They understand very well when America's extraordinary debt is not continually recycled by foreign countries ready to purchase our T-bills and bonds, we're able to face hyperinflation similar to Zimbabwe and Weimar Germany that could cause massive civil unrest. Dangerous times and great risks call for precautions, and Survivalists consider their personal safety, which of their loved ones, paramount. A Survivalist may have firearms in most cases a really specific plan for "hunkering down" or "bugging out" if law and order break up.

So what can We Study on Preppers and Survivalists

It might be difficult to get a Survivalist who isn't a Prepper, as well as most Preppers have thought a lot about survivalism and protecting themselves. Anyone would greatly benefit from considering those two sets of people and what can be learned from them.

If there was an electric outage that lasted for more than 2 or 3 days, how would you act? If the governments (city, state and federal) couldn't maintain your Hurricane Katrina victims, exactly what does that let you know about being prepared? Have you thought about that the propane leak, train derailment with hazardous materials, power outage or terror attack could turn your loved ones into refugees if you don't have an agenda?
